A STRONG flag bracket May 11, 2010
By Roger C. Burchett I fly a 3' x 5' flag 24/7 (except in really bad weather). My first bracket was solid cast brass, and it lasted for 5 years. Every few months, the bracket loosened up and I had to re-tighten the screws or replace them with bigger and longer ones. Eventually, the screw holes had stretched out so much they broke through the brass. The main problem was in the bracket design. The screw holes are too close together, and stresses from wind blowing the flag are too concentrated in the bracket foot.
Since then, Ive tried several available brackets, variously PVC, adjustable cast aluminum, and stamped steel - none last more than 6 months or so. These brackets just bend or break.
I thought about buying another cast brass bracket. It held out for a long time, and appearance is great - but it's expensive, and the design is still the same as ever.
This new Electric Way Aluminum bracket is far heavier than most others, with a good wide mounting foot. I can tell already (after a few weeks) that it is more than a match for the high winds in my area, and it should last.
One minor problem though - it was necessary to slip a short sleeve over the end of my 3/4" fiberglass flag pole, to make it fit in the 1" socket hole in the new bracket.
