5The state flag of North Dakota for citizens of the Peace Garden State  Mar 20, 2006
By Lawrance M. Bernabo
The state flag of North Dakota is based on a regimental flag that was carried by North Dakota infantry during the Spanish American War in 1898 and the Philippine Island insurrection in 1899. The state legislature adopted the flag in 1911, voting on a resolution by Colonel John H. Fraine, that added the name of the state, North Dakota, on a red scroll beneath the Bald Eagle. A bill was introduced in 1953 to change the state flag because it was felt the design resembled the United States coat of arms too closely and therefore was not particularly symbolic of North Dakota, but it was defeated.

The North Dakota flag consists of a dark blue field with a Bald Eagle in the center. In its right claw it grasps an olive branch and in its left a bundle of arrows. Its beak carries a ribbon with the word "One nation made up of many states." On the breast of the eagle is a shield with thirteen stars and thirteen stripes, representing the original thirteen states. Above the eagle is a fan shaped design that again has thirteen stars and a sunburst, symbolizing the birth of a new nation.

This is a 3" x 5" nylon flag, but othr sizes both larger and smaller are available. It is a single reverse flag, made of durable 100% heavyweight nylon fabric, which has been specially treated to minimize deterioration because of the sun or chemicals. It features brilliant, fast colors, a strong canvas heading, and a pair of brass grommets. North Dakotans can fly this flag whether they consider where they live to be the Peace Garden State (the International Peace Garden begins there and ends in Manitoba), the Flickertail State (because of the Richardson ground squirrels), or the Rough Rider State (because Theodore Roosevelt organized the Roughriders and several of them were cowboys from North Dakota).
